Maya k Schweizer was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado and received her BFA from the University of Denver. She has exhibited in the United States and India and her paintings are in collections in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Paintings reflect her love of nature and an exploration of both the natural world and abstraction. Ongoing sketchbook journals record visual and emotional experiences from her life and travels, which become the images seen in Schweizer’s work. Drawings and paintings merge the real and the unreal both in subjective landscapes influenced by abstraction and in paintings of pure abstraction inviting the viewer into another realm beyond our everyday vision. Schweizer taught Drawing, Painting and Art History at Sacramento Country Day School for several decades sharing her passion for creative exploration with her students. A member of Matrix Workshop of Women Artists, she exhibited with Matrix locally and has participated in invitational shows across the U. S. and in India. Her passion for the art of other cultures, non-western art and ancient sites has prompted her travels throughout North America, Europe and India, inspiring numerous drawings and paintings. Schweizer has received the Douc Langur Award from California Art Education Association, Francie Tidey Award from Sacramento Country Day School and is included in “51 Portraits of Women Artists,” by noted photographer, Kurt Edward Fishback. She currently teaches classes at Artistic Edge Gallery and students in her Sacramento studio.
